Tallest Cathedrals in the World: Despite its size, Cologne Cathedral is not the tallest cathedral in the world. That title is held by the Sagrada Familia, a cathedral in Barcelona, Spain that is under construction since the early twentieth century. Hence, It is expected to be completed in 2026. However, in the meantime, its two spires are the tallest in the world.

Cologne Cathedral

Height: 157 m (515 ft)

Although, Cologne Cathedral is a huge structure that stands on the corner of the main railway station in Cologne, Germany. Although, its main spire is 530 feet tall, and its south tower is a little taller. It is also the tallest church building in the world. In addition, the cathedral is the home of the Archbishop of Cologne’s seat, and houses an administrative couple of the Archdiocese of Cologne.

The Cathedral of Saint John The Divine in New York is another of the world’s tallest cathedrals, and the largest Anglican cathedral in the world. Hence, Design by George Heins and Christopher Grant Lafarge in the 1890s. During the Second World War, the Cathedral severely damaged by aerial bombings. In fact, The Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, is another tall church building. Additionally, it is the highest Catholic church structure in the world. Although, it has two towers, one of which is a sarcophagus of the three Magi. Moreover, the Three Wise Men’s skulls and gems form the sarcophagus’s crown. Another notable example of late Gothic architecture is the cathedral, also constructed in that style.

The Ulm Minster

The Ulm Minster in Ulm, Germany, started as a Roman Catholic church and finish in 1530, but the spire wasn’t finish until 1890. Hence, the spire is the tallest in the world. In fact, it has seven hundred and fifty steps that lead up to the top of the building. It offers sweeping views of the city of Ulm, as well as the Alps from Santis to Zugspitze. The interior of the building is not especially impressive, although it features wooden pews carved by Jorg Syrlin.

The cathedral of Notre Dame is another building that is taller than the Sagrada Familia. Although, the cathedral of Notre Dame was the tallest building in the world between 1874 and 1876. Hence, in the 1800s, the Hunchback of Notre Dame inspired a major renovation of the building. The cathedral has been home to several relics over the years, and was also the setting for Claude Monet’s paintings, including the famous Water Lilies series. It was also the setting of Victor Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

The cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France, hence is the tallest structure built in the middle age, between 1647 and 1874. Although, its height surpassed by saint Nikolai’s church in Hamburg, Germany, in 1876. The building demolished in 1931, but the cathedral rebuilt in 2009-2011, and it is now the third tallest church building in the world.
