Second Largest Religion
Muslim Population in the World: It is estimated that Islam is the second largest religion in the world after Christianity. However, Muslims are still a minority in many parts of the world, including Europe and the Americas.
During the past century, the percentage of the world’s Muslim population has increased by less than one percentage point per decade. However, the growth rate is expected to slow down to just 28% by 2050.
The number of Muslims is projected to reach 1.8 billion by 2030. This is almost a quarter of the estimated 6.8 billion people on Earth.

Countries with the largest Muslim populations
In addition to Indonesia, the countries with the largest Muslim populations are Turkey, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Egypt. Islam is also the dominant religion in the Middle East, South East Asia, and North Africa.
Pakistan is expected to overtake Indonesia as the world’s largest Muslim nation by the end of the decade. The number of Muslims is predicted to reach one billion by 2020, making Pakistan one of the most populous countries on Earth.
Bangladesh is the world’s fourth-largest Muslim nation and its population is projected to double by the end of the decade. The country is also expected to surpass Indonesia as the world’s largest Muslim nation in 2030.
The world’s Muslim population will continue to be concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2010, 62% of the world’s Muslims lived in Asia and Pacific. The remainder of the world’s Muslims live in North Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.
Muslim population in Indonesia
The world’s largest Muslim population is found in Indonesia. This country is home to about 231 million Muslims.
The rest of the world’s Muslim population is scattered throughout the five inhabited continents.
Middle East and North Africa: Muslim Population in the World
In addition to the Asian countries, the world’s Muslim population will also continue to be concentrated in the Middle East and North Africa. In fact, this region is expected to have the largest percentage of Muslim-majority countries. Countries in this region include Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Syria, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. In addition, Islam is the dominant religion in many smaller countries.
In the Middle East, the number of Muslims has increased by nearly one percentage point each decade since 1950. The world’s largest Muslim population is expected to increase by about one-half percent each decade until 2050. While the population in the region is growing, many of the countries are still aging. In fact, the median age in this region is expected to rise to age 30 by 2030. This will be a big change from the 19-year-old median age of 1990. However, this is still much lower than the median age in the developed nations of Europe and North America.
The growth rate of the Muslim population is also influenced by decreasing total fertility rates. In Muslim-majority countries, women tend to have more children than women in non-Muslim countries. However, the number of births will continue to drop. Nevertheless, it is estimated that the Muslim population will be relatively youthful for decades to come.
