The story of the world’s tallest Christmas tree began in 1948 when a small group of businessmen in Bellingham, Washington, got together and came up with the idea of building the tallest tree. The group, known as the Jaycees, announced their plan to build a tree on December 11, 1948. The group wanted to make a mark in the history books by establishing the record for the tallest Christmas tree.

The Citadel has held the record for hoisting the tallest Christmas tree six times. According to Guinness World Records, the tallest cut Christmas tree ever was a 221-foot Douglas fir in 1950. However, if this Citadel tree were to be erected today, it would dwarf the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, which is a Norway spruce. In addition, the National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C., is a Colorado blue spruce.

Christmas tree competitions for the “tallest” had been popular for a while, and Jim Douglas (1909-2005), president of the Northgate Company in 1950, later recalled this in a People’s History for HistoryLink: “The suggestion was made that Northgate should put an end to this contest for the tallest Christmas tree.
